As electronic dance music has grown, genres have become more and more complex. And with complex releases, the community has struggled to fully agree with Monstercat's official genres of their releases. To help ease the difference between Monstercat's official genre listings and the community's genre and sub-genre listings, the Community Genre ranking system was created.

In the song, remix, EP and LP infoboxes, the "Released As" field is meant only for Monstercat-official genres, while the "Community Genre" and "Sub-Genre(s)" fields are meant for the community to list genres and sub-genres that they feel suit releases best.

Below is a short guide on what to do when encountering these fields while editing.

  1. If a release contains the correct genre in "Released As", leave it alone. If it is not filled or incorrect, please refer to Monstercat's website, search for the release with it's official genre listing, and fill in the field with the appropriate genre and link to the genre's page on the Wiki.
  2. If the community agrees with the "Released As" genre, fill in the "Community Genre" with the same genre and link to the appropriate genre page. If the genre in "Released As" is incorrect in your opinion, reach out to the Wiki staff and community on Discord or on the Discussion feed to discuss the track's genre(s). Afterward, leave or adjust the "Community Genre" field.
  3. If the community believes a release has multiple genres, fill in the genres in "Community Genre" with bullet points or a vertical bar "|" to separate the genres. Use bullet points to separate genres that are clearly separate to hear in the track (example: Star Glide), and vertical bars to separate genres that are blended together in the track (example: Born For This).
    • In EP and LP tracklists, genres are separated with forward slashes (replacing bullet points) and vertical bars, having the same meanings as described.
  4. If the community believes sub-genres will best explain a release as well, fill in the "Sub-Genre(s)" field with the sub-genre(s) linked to the original genre pages. Use the separation tools from step 3 for multiple sub-genres.
  5. If a release lists a Monstercat-official genre that is known as a sub-genre by the community (example: Happy Hardcore), fill in the "Released As" genre under "Sub-Genre(s)" and fill in "Community Genre" with the main genre (example: Hardcore) and link the appropriate pages in each field.
