Midtempo (short for Midtempo Bass) is a genre that emerged in the mid-late 2010s. Notable producers of Midtempo include Rezz, 1788-L, and INTERCOM.
Midtempo combines characteristics of Electro House, Post-Industrial and Tech House, and sometimes has elements of Dubstep. It typically runs with a four-on-the-floor beat with a BPM of around 90-110, and combines harsh synth leads to create dark, aggressive tracks. Modern forms of midtempo have even combined elements of Synthwave and Melodic Dubstep.[1]
A subgenre of Midtempo that mixes elements of Melodic Dubstep and Synthwave.[1] It is meant to have a more melodic atmosphere that strays from the dark and grimy sounds of normal Midtempo. Tracks in this subgenre can be faster than normal, with some tracks even reaching up to 170 BPM. In Monstercat labeling, Melodic Midtempo is often confused with Drumstep.
