The song's music video was first previewed live during a Monstercat Podcast as, per Billboard the day of the song's official release, "a clever bit of disruptive marketing". After the podcast appeared to fall victim to a cyber attack, viewers were shown a sneak peak of the "Build The Cities" video.[1] A YouTube user, in the comments for the podcast YouTube upload that Thursday, described it as the following:
“
Basically, a console like thing appeared, inputting loads of weird commands. It then went to a thingy which gave a preview of "Build The Cities".
The song and its music video were officially released via Monstercat's YouTube channel on March 2, 2015. Build The Cities (Reconstructions) followed on May 27, 2015.
On January 20, 2016, Karma Fields hinted on Twitter that the song would be the eighth track on New Age | Dark Age.[3]
The "Build The Cities" music video was created by visual artist Raven Kwok using custom Java systems and an Xbox Kinect. About the video, Kwok said: "Every time I run the system, it will produce a different visual outcome due to randomness of the initial parameters. So the music video itself is an organized yet unpredicted outcome."[1]
